NextG's Distributed Antenna System Withstands Atlanta Tornado
-DAS nodes supported first responders after tornado took down power lines -
SAN JOSE, CA - NextG Networks, Inc., a leading provider of distributed-antenna-system (DAS) networks, announced that NextG's Atlanta network operated according to NextG's contingency plan as a March 14, 2008 tornado raced through the city, caused numerous injuries, destroyed property and infrastructure, and cut utility power lines.
Immediately after area utility power sources went down, NextG's Atlanta DAS nodes automatically switched to the customer's battery back-up power, which kept much-needed wireless communication service available to first responders, city workers, and E911 callers during the first and most critical 90-minute time period after the tornado struck. NextG personnel were on-site before and after authorities opened the area to non-emergency personnel, and NextG's entire DAS network system was restored to normal operation immediately upon utility power restoration.
"As the tornado passed through downtown Atlanta, our network operations center was in contact with the affected operator," said Richard Walker, NextG's Director of Network Operations. "Our technicians were available and onsite starting immediately after the storm to ensure that our mobile services were fully restored as quickly as possible. We’re proud of our network’s performance during this devastating storm."
NextG Networks® DAS solutions provide performance improvements, including increased voice quality, greater call traffic handling, fewer dropped calls, better mobile coverage, faster file transfers, and enhanced video quality. The networks use strategically placed low-power, fiber-optic-fed nodes that blend with their surroundings.
