NextG Networks Gains Access to Chicago's ComEd Infrastructure

-Signs agreement to enable the expansion of its innovative wireless transport network across the Northern Illinois region.-

MILPITAS, CA - NextG Networks, a next-generation wireless communications company, announced that it has signed a general pole attachment agreement with Commonwealth Edison ("ComEd"), an electric utility that services Northern Illinois. The agreement provides NextG with access to ComEd's extensive network of electrical distribution poles, including those that are located throughout the City of Chicago and its greater metropolitan area.

"ComEd's extensive network of power distribution poles is pervasive across Northern Illinois and within the City of Chicago, and we currently provide power services to over 70 percent of the State's population. It makes perfect sense for NextG Networks to co-locate their equipment on our infrastructure to also provide wireless coverage," said David Peterson, Director of Real Estate and Facilities at ComEd.

NextG Networks will leverage the strategic location of ComEd's utility poles as it continues to build out its proprietary Course-Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing ("CWDM") transport networks through the United States. The microcellular network architecture will enable mobile network operators and public wireless LAN hotspot service providers to cost-effectively increase their network capacity and wireless coverage in the Chicagoland, as well as the Northern Illinois suburbs.

NextG will attach its microcellular network infrastructure to ComEd's utility poles and will efficiently transport wireless WAN and LAN traffic over fiber optic networks to the wireless service providers' co-location facilities. The wireless service providers will not only benefit from a coverage and capacity advantage, but will also avoid the high installation costs that are inherent to the build-out of legacy cellular towers and/or wireless rooftop sites.

"The agreement with ComEd firmly supports our strategic plan to deploy cost-effective wireless sites in locations where it would otherwise be impractical or unfeasible given the cumbersome zoning requirements and sight obstruction restrictions," said John Georges, CEO at NextG Networks.
